Development of Network Use Telescope System Finished
- On-line Observatory System CATS-iTM -Goto Optical Mfg.,Co. (President: Ryuichiro Goto; Fuchu-shi, Tokyo, Japan) and Media i Corporation (President: Tadashi Mori; Hachioji-shi, Tokyo, Japan) have finished the development of new telescope system which users can operate via network called "CATS-i"TM and started operation from April 2001.
Goto Optical Mfg.,Co. (President: Ryuichiro Goto; Fuchu-shi, Tokyo, Japan) and Media i Corporation (President: Tadashi Mori; Hachioji-shi, Tokyo, Japan) with cooperation of Yamanashi Prefectural Science Center (Director: Osamu Kawasumi; Kofu-shi, Yamanashi, Japan) have finished the development of new telescope system CATS-i which users can operate telescopes made by Goto such as "20cm Coudé Telescope", "25cm Coudé Telescope", "45cm Reflecting Telescope" and "Astrocar" via network. The first installation was made in Kazo city and started operation from April 2001.
Formerly users utilized large telescopes with a computer connected directly to the system and operate them in real time. By this new system users can utilize telescopes from a computer even at a distant place as well as directly connected computers. Also users can submit observation programs to the system and will get results later. So users don't have to operate the telescope in real time. When teachers have a class of Astronomy they have had difficulties in managing pupils and students at night. With this system, pupils and students can submit requests in daytime and get images later. The first installation of "20cm Coudé Telescope with CATS-i" was made at Kazo Miraikan (Future Museum) in Kazo, Saitama, Japan and started operation from April 2001.This system was also made at Osaka Kyoiku (Education) University in Tennoji, Osaka, Japan and operated from Kashiwabara campus via the university LAN.
This development was supported from a project of "Multimedia Pilot Town Concept" by TAO (Telecommunication Advancement Organization of Japan) under Somu-sho (Ministry of Public Management, Home Affairs, Posts and Telecommunications) and cooperation with Yamanasi Prefectural Science Center that participates in the project."20cm Coudé Telescope with CATS-III" was installed to the science center and they provide heavenly body images to schools in Yamanashi prefecture. In the future, they plan to connect the system to the Internet and provide them to the world.
